You have 10 hours. How far can you go? UltraTrax is a single-day endurance walking challenge where you choose your distance: 7, 14, 21, or 28 miles. Complete it unweighted or take it up a level with a 10, 20, or 35 lb ruck and earn bonus swag along the way. Built for all experience levels, UltraTrax brings together anyone ready to see what they’re capable of.
A mountain-built trek across Massanutten’s rugged western slope. Push your pace. Carry your weight. Move with the pack.
Massanutten is getting a major upgrade for 2027 with two course options to choose from, designed for every level of participant.
Beginner and intermediate trekkers can complete their entire experience on the scenic Western Slope trail system, featuring flowing forest trails, steady climbs, and rugged Shenandoah terrain without the steepest descents.
For advanced participants looking for an extra challenge, an optional final segment will open up along Massanutten’s ridgeline and ski slopes adding steeper elevation changes and highly technical rock scrambles. This is extremely challenging and should only be attempted if you’re an experienced hiker!
Please note: the advanced ridgeline/ski slope option will only be available in safe weather conditions and may close in the event of rain or wet terrain.

Your day begins on the western slope—a mix of flowing singletrack, wide doubletrack, and fast mountain-bike lines that warm up the legs and set your pace.
Expect a true Blue Ridge mountain experience, with long stretches of forested single-track, rolling fire roads, and ridgeline sections that open to wide-angle views of the Shenandoah Valley.
If taking on the advanced course, you’ll descend back toward the resort, transitioning from quiet wooded trails onto steep rock scrambles and vertical ski slopes.

Yes. All distances must be completed within 10 hours to officially finish the challenge and earn your UltraTrax patch and medal (Level 3 and 4 only). This window is designed to push you, but still give walkers of all abilities enough time to complete the course safely.
Not at all. UltraTrax is built for all levels of athletic ability. You choose your distance and whether to level up with a weighted vest or ruck.
Yes- check our custom training plans HERE.
Wear clothing you’re comfortable sweating in. Light, breathable layers, moisture-wicking socks, and a hat or sun protection. Choose trail shoes or road shoes you’ve already tested on longer walks. If conditions are wet or muddy, trail shoes with grip are ideal.
UltraTrax is designed as a walking event, but you won’t be disqualified for running! We just ask that you follow approporatie trail etiquette and only pass when it’s safe and there’s plenty of room. If the trail narrows to single-track or feels crowded, we ask that you slow to a walk and stay in line until it opens up again.
Your safety comes first. If you need to stop, UltraTrax volunteers and staff will help guide you back to the base area or to the nearest aid station.
The route will be clearly marked with signage, arrows, bright tape, and volunteers will be stationed at key intersections and aid points.
Because UltraTrax requires significant planning, staffing, and coordination with our resort / course partners, registrations are non-refundable. If you can no longer attend, you may transfer your registration to a future event date for a small fee.
Yes! We will only reschedule an event if the weather appears dangerous to our participants.
We love dogs, but unfortunately they are not allowed at our events.
We have three ruck categories: 10, 20, 35 pounds. You need to bring your own weight if you decide to compete in any rucking division. Any level completed with extra weight qualifies for a bonus giveaway. We weigh packs/vests the morning of the event. All items count toward the total weight except for perishables like water and snacks.
There will be complimentary shuttles to get you to the start, with parking near the finish line.
